Anyone using Entourage needs to know how to configure their Microsoft User Data files so Time Machine will only backup the incremental changes. Otherwise, Time Machine will try to back up the entire database file every time it is modified, even though only a few megabytes (e.g., receiving a single new email) out of several gigabytes of the file have been changed. Very, very annoying plus this will quickly fill up your backup storage and can cause each backup to take a relatively long time. You can avoid this problem by creating a sparse bundle disk image for your user data. The most helpful and easy to follow instructions for doing this are contained in an online article in Mac OS Hints, October 29, 2009. Amazon does not allow direct links to the article but a search should turn it up fairly easily.

great product so far. Bought it about two months. Being new to mac’s I was surprised how easy this external drive/storage was to set up. I am for a PC person who is now a mac convert.

Pro: Finally the 4th generation of TC has reached perfection. It took me 10 min to install and configure. It’s a Gigabit router with 1TB hard that you can use as NAS server. Comes with Time Machine a great piece of software that can backup wireless your Mac.

Cons: It doesn’t support torrent client and UPnP and DLNA – that means that you cannot use this with SonyPlastation3.

Set up is reasonably straight forward; though I did need help re-setting the Airport Extreme Base Station that had been my hub to be used now as a repeater.

The Time Machine feature is everything I had hoped….close to 100% automatic.

I purchased this product about a month ago, and I couldn’t be happier. I replaced a Netgear wireless router and 2 Netgear USB print servers. As with most Apple products, it was easy to configure and I had it working in only a few minutes.

Although the Time Capsule backup ability is key, the thing that I like the best is the integrated wireless router and the ability to attach USB printers and hard drives. I have 2 printers (HP LaserJet & HP InkJet) and 1 USB hard drive attached to the Time Capsule via a USB hub, and they all work flawlessly. Each printer was easy to configure on both Mac OSX (Airport Utility) and Windows 7 boxes (Bonjour print service). It was a little bit harder to get the USB hard drive working, but that was because I did not understand that the drive had to be formated HFS+ in order to be seen by the Time Capsule. This is not clear in the documentation, but once I figured that out, it was just plug and play.

I have not had the device long enough to see if it is going to last more than a year, but I certainly hope it does. Overall, I am very happy with the product and highly recommend it.

Going on three months of use. I do wonder about some of the posts about this thing dying after 18 months as this particular model (dual band) has not been in existence that long…

As a router, this thing is tops. Used it to replace a Linksys N router. I get much better range and much faster data now on my macbook. Before, in my bedroom, less than 50 ft away from my router, I couldn’t watch standard def Hulu videos at all. Now I can stream high def videos without any delays or pauses. Part of it is because I also have G devices (Wii, iphones, etc) and the old linksys was forced to operate on that slower frequency. This thing effectively gives you a separate G router and N router- so my macbook finally can operate at full N speed but still provide service to older devices. This thing smokes the linksys in range and speed.

As a time capsule it works. I backup my iMac and my Macbook to it. I had a Seagate drive before that died after 9 months. So now I have a time capsule and another external hard drive, I rotate between the two to have redundant data for WHEN one of them fails. All Hard drives fail at some point. I do wonder about heat, there’s no fan, but it never gets very hot to the touch.

Very happy with it so far.

Excellent. Two minutes to set up. Works like a charm. Takes about one hour to sync with your main mac the first time (first time only, plenty of movies and photos). Link with second mac and one Windows PC effortlessly. So far, so good.

I upgraded to this 1TB Time Capsule from my previous 500GB Time Capsule. My setup consists of Verizon FIOS 25/15 ISP, a computer and a printer connected directly to this Time Capsule via Ethernet, 3 wireless computers and 6 other wireless devices.

I use this Time Capsule as the house’s main wireless router. Compared to the previous Time Capsule, the Transmit Rate using the MacBook Pro increased from max 145 to a max 300 Mbps. Depending on what other wireless devices are on, my Transmit Rate has gone as low as 169, which is still pretty good.

My main reason for purchasing a Time Capsule is for the ability to wirelessly backup my MacBook Pro on an hourly basis using the Time Machine set-and-forget backup feature. The Guest Network is a really cool feature which allows guests to connect to a separate network using a separate password, or no password at all if you prefer, without affecting your network or having to divulge your secret password. The signal is strong enough so that I do not need access points to cover a 2.5 level home and all of a 1/3 acre lot.

I have read reviews commenting negatively on reliability, durability, and freezing tendencies. Luckily for me, none of these have been an issue.

As an aside, I you consider that 1TB or 2TB internal hard drive is not large enough, you can always bridge however many external hard drives to this Time Capsule. However, you would be limited to 2.0 USB or Ethernet connections (no FireWire).

My wife and I just made a complete switch to Mac. We each have our own iMacs now and decided to purchase the time capsule at the same time we bought the computers. Since we also purchased Apple Care at the same time, the time capsule will be covered for 3 years in case problems do crop up. For now, however, it has been great. It took me less than an hour to get it set-up and all our devices connected. This includes 2 iMacs, an iPhone, an iPod touch, 2 Windows XP computers, a Windows 7 computer, a Windows Vista computer, PS3, and xBox 360. All connected with no issues. I also got my work laptop connected with no issues. I have a printer hooked up to it so now we can print wirelessly. All in all it was pretty simple.

What can I say, it works.

I recommend Time Capsule for sharing data or for backups, not both. If you need both, get 2 Time Capsules, one for each use. For sharing data, Time Capsule is great. Every computer on the network can access the device easily.

The Time Capsule provides the easiest back ups possible. It is very easy to set-up and use. I suggest one user per Time Capsule. This keeps set-up simple, and provides the maximum storage space possible. If you have a laptop, this is the backup solution for you. If you have a desktop computer, I’d suggest a dedicated Firewire 800 hard drive for backups. Why? Because wireless is SLOW when compared with wired. USB is SLOW compared to Firewire 800, but USB is faster than wireless. So why do I recommend Time Capsule for laptops? To get rid of the wires, that’s why you have a laptop. With any backup system your first backup will take a LONG time, but subsequent backups will be much quicker. Just be patient.

With backups, easy is a must. If it’s not easy, it’s not going to happen. Mac users? Use Time Machine. It works.

Some people complain that Time Capsules sometimes break. Yep, happens. Grow up, it’s mechanical, it’ll break. Get AppleCare for it. When it breaks, Apple will fix it. But my backups are on it! So? I assume you didn’t kill your computer too. Just make a new backup and move on.

If your computer data is important to you, get a Time Capsule, or many. It’s the best backup solution out there. I know, I’ve tried many. I want easy, dependable. This is it.
