Our old D-Link 624 was starting to need rebooting weekly so it was time to upgrade. The router now is located in the master bedroom, so cosmetic appeal or should I say low visual impact was desired. This unit is very sleek and if it didn’t have lights, would be almost unnoticeable.
After dealing with wireless routers since they came out the Cisco software makes it “Apple” easy. Our IS provider is Comcast and rebooting of the modem was required. The E2000 came with a SSID name that was good enough to keep (not Linksys or Cisco) and WPA / WPA2 security already on. After setup, it was time to connect all the wireless devices (4 – iPhones, 2 – lap tops, Xbox 360)which went flawless. Left it at the default 2.4mhz and no conflicts with any other devices in the house. The wireless range is a bit better then the prior Dlink and gives us good to excellent signal strength thru 3 – 4 walls. I don’t believe any of our devices can take true advantage of the N+ but we’ll be ready for it.
I got this router yesterday after having issues with my netgear 614 for a while now. I had needed 2 different access point for my house in order to get good range of service. well guess what now all i need is this e2000!!! no more access points needed. easy instal 3 steps and was online! only thing that confused me was the fact that it automatically makes a guest ssid but i did not want it, and had hard time removing it. but at the end was complete and was pushing OVER 10MBPS wirelessly!!! when my netgear dident even push 2 mbps. anyway I am writing this as when i was shopping there was only 1 review and was making me think twice before buying as i was comparing with the D-Link DIR-644 that had alot of reviews. So good luck on your decision making!!!!
I bought this router after my linksys wrt54g started going out. It is a great router, with great features and flexibility. I am not utilizing any of the N wireless yet, but it is nice to have the option. I do like the built in gig switch. There are two reasons I gave it 3 stars. 1: The range on the e2000 is not as good as my wrt54g. I believe this is because of the lack of external antennas on the e2000. 2: They haven’t changed the webpage that is published for setup. I think it is time they update that.
Unless you have an need for advanced advanced gaming setup, this router will do just fine. I am gaming on my Mac, PS3, and Xbox with no issues at all. No need for the e3000 for gaming.
My old router disconnected on me all the time, and most computers are Wireless N anways, so I decided to buy a N router. I did quite a bit research. Acutally, you need to replace a router every 2-3 years, at least for me. Electrical component has life like human being too.
I was torn between E2000 or E3000. E3000 is a little bit faster, has a power switch at the back, and it also has a USB connection. But for $50 less, I got E2000.
The installation is a superise! I didn’t mean it in a bad way. It is no brainer job. You can just sit there and follow the CD instuction. I used to configure my own router all the time. So that was different. The “automatic” configuration took about 10-20 minutes. I am not quiet sure, becasue I walked away from the computer when it was doing itself.
It also give you a “cute” network name instead of the tranditional Linksys or netgeare, the ones others can identify router brand. ( I know if someone wants to break into your network, they will, but same as you put a pad lock on your door.) Of course you can change the SSID name later if you want to.
What is really silly about this router is that it creates a guess network automaticlly, so your guest doesn’t need you permision or password to have internet connection. I don’t want to public broadcasting my network to neighbor’s teenagers. So I turned it off.
Now, comes to the speed, it is so fast, I wish I had this router sooner. The coverage is great too. I was at the other side of house, still get excellent signal.
Also the control program is very user friendly. Actually it is too friendly, you can access the setup without password from the setup computer. I wish it can be disabled. Maybe I haven’t done it, I will keep update on this router, after all, I had it for less than a week. I haven’t had one signal drop in the past 4 days.
This is only my personal opinion, please don’t choose a router based on what I said.
Bought yesterday. Incredibly easy to install (even for a neophyte such as myself) and all three computers in my home (2 wireless; 1 wired) are running fast and crisp. For what it’s worth, it also looks nice on my desk.
Replaced an older Linksys router and this one is working great. Love the N speed with my MacBooks and the added speed for copying files. Easy install – plug in, config with same name, passphrase and reboot computers in the house and was off and running around the internet.
I’m an extremely knowledgeable developer/network guru. This device fought me. Do not buy this if you know what you’re doing, or are going to configure it a bit before taking it to the final installation destination. You can’t even FATHOM how bad the setup for this router is. I mean, go ahead and try to make it as stupid as possible. Done? Now compare it to this:
1. Initially, you can only set it up by the CD. No browser connection allowed. (Actually, you can… see below.)
2. So you optimistically plug it into your switch and boot the CD.
3. Error! Too many networks found. Can’t configure the router. So plug it into the desktop computer directly.
4. What? You plugged it into a second port on your P.C. so you could stay internet/network connected? Nope, router still says too many networks. You can only have the router connected.
5. Okay, with ONLY the router connected, Cisco Connect found the router. But it’s not connected to the internet. Aborting! Huh?!
Seriously, this is one screwed up setup. And if you then go to “advanced” setup (which you can’t do before failing all the rest), it warns you that this could prevent you from using Cisco Connect in the future. Oh, we can only hope!
Oh, and did I mention there’s no printed manual!
Once you get this puppy configured halfway, as long as you wrote down (and promptly changed in TWO places) the cryptic passcode it creates for you, it seems to be a fine piece of kit. But getting that far… if you know how to do it normally… is frustrating. Instead, you should either use Cisco Connect with just the router connected to your Windows/Mac box, or read page 16 in the PDF inside a subdirectory of the CD and use 192.168.1.1/admin/admin to get into the configuration. That’s easier and faster.
I’ll update this review with performance, etc, later if it warrants it.
This was a replacement for a wireless g router I was using that was starting to require frequent rebooting.
The E2000 was very easy to install. You start by installing a CD that runs a program that quickly and easily guides you through the installation. My install needed one additional step at the end to get reconnected to the internet. This step was suggested by a troubleshooting menu brought up by the install program. I had to turn off the power for a minute to the cable moden that was connected to the E2000.
The wireless settings and the connection program can be saved on any USB drive and this makes it very easy to connect other computers to the secure network.
The E2000 also has a guest network that allows guests to connect to the wirless conection using a password of your choice. This is how we connect the Ipod touch to the internet.
Overall my installation was fast and easy, the way it should be.
I recently decided to upgrade my home network. I had been using Linksys to address the mixture of Apple and PC product throughout the house. My G-draft router was a solid little performer that also had a USB input for a hard drive. I really loved that router.
But I wanted Gigabit ports and n-draft ability so I upgraded to the E2000. It is by far the most affordable of the gigabit n-draft combos. I wish it had the USB for the price (my old router was 100$ that is what I paid for this one) but all in all it is a great product.
Pros: Gigabit 10/100/1000 4 port hard wired router. Ability to limit ports bandwidth or availability. Set up disk was so easy and accurate I never had to dial into the router to make adjustments. Ability to run either band. Linksys support
Cons: Not Dual Simultaneous (more expensive option). No USB (more expensive option). does not have the ability to look at switches on the router. (I have all linksys it would be nice if it could read the entire network and make adjustments). New footprint makes not compatible with my stacking routers of old. ( I would love if I could get stackable switches to minimize the footprint my network materials need.)
The other item I wish Linksys offered was a 6 or 8 port wired gigabit hub with a n draft. But in order to achieve this you have to buy multiple products and have some familiarity with network set up. Again if the disk would do all the setup I would list that as a pro.
