The Linksys EG005W is an excellent Workgroup Switch. Just connect the devices/computers and plug it in. It works great. No hassle, no trouble.
(NOTE: The newer version is smaller than the one pictured.)

So I’m reading all these other reviews and I see people complaining about Amazon sending the wrong item, fan noise, LEDs not working correctly, etc. Well I can rest your fears at ease and confirm that I got the item pictured (silver with blue logo) and that it has been working flawlessly for over a year now. Speeds are consistent and it is silent! I’ve always loved Linksys products since my first WRT54G way back when, and this one continues to fill their shoes. I guess my only complaint would be that because of the small size of the unit, the weight of the connected Ethernet cables tends to pull it away from it’s original position on the shelf/table that it’s on. But this is the case with many computer accessories now-a-days, so I can’t fault them too much for it. I think short of putting a lead block inside these hubs and switches, there’s really no way to weigh them down enough to prevent them from moving.
Overall, it’s a simple yet great switch that is good for extending your network beyond the 4 computers that most wireless routers allow. I have this connected to my router (Apple Time Capsule) to give access to the wired computers on the second floor of my house and cannot complain at all. I get full speed between computers on both floors, and that’s all I can ask for!

The unit works as advertised. However, one of the ports did not recognize one of the RJ-45 jacks I plugged in. When I switched that cable to another port it worked fine. The problem port did recognize one of the other RJ-45 jacks on a different cable so, so far so good. Customer service is from India (to be expected) but other than asking 20 non-essential questions before getting to the real issue…they were at least friendly. They were no help in explaining why the port discriminated between the jacks but were willing to exchange the unit if I wanted to ship it back. The unit has operated well for the past month.

This unit was recommended to me by my favorite MAC guru and works perfectly. Looks good. It’s plug and play. 0 hassle. I would buy it again. Be aware that it runs very warm to the touch. That’s normal from what I hear and read.

I purchased the EG005W six months ago. Since I installed, it has been working 24/7 flawlessly, hooked to three PCs with gigabit ethernet (two systems with Intel’s PRO 1000/MT PCI cards and one with a Realtek 8139 PCI card).
I obtain gigabit links to all three systems using regular Cat “5e” cables (believe me, if you don’t need super long cables, cat5e is just good enough, no need for the more expensive cat6), and the speed is only limited to about 400mbps by the 33Mhz PCI BUS, not by the switch (to obtain the full bandwidth, you need a system with Gigabit built on the system board which bypasses the PCI bus bandwidth limitation). Still, 4x faster than 100mbit fast ethernet is a huge improvement.
VNC sessions from one system to the other over gigabit feels almost like a local session.
Very stable unit, can be stacked on top of other likewise Linksys units (mine sits on top of a BEFSR41 ethernet firewall/router). Cons? It’s got an internal fan. So if you have a bunch of Linksys devices, you need to place the EG005W on top, to allow proper air flow.
The fan is not _very_ noisy, just noticeable. Like a notebook’s fan during normal operation.

Amazon is NOT shipping the pictured item – they are shipping the EG005W-V3, which is not only a totally different form factor – it has fewer features (led indicates connection only).
On the plus side, This one has no fan so is totally quiet – on the minus side, the V3 version is cheaper and that lower price is NOT reflected here!!

Since the beginning of wifi, i have been purchasing linksys products. Now with Cisco’s involvement (high end routers, switches, gateways etc), things can only get better.
Out of the box… no adjustments needed.
just the way i like it.
the only minus is the fan incorporated in the chassis is a little loud. as loud as my hp laserjet 5000 when it’s cranking.

I’ve seen several reviews about the old linksys product, about it was very noisy, but the switch that I received was excelent, because it’s smaller than the one in the picture and because the functionality of the gigabit transfer is just perfect.
I’d ask to amazon and the seller to update the product description in the webpage.

Item seems to be working properly. However, when first set up, it was very noisy. It seems the cooling fan was somehow not functioning properly. It was easy to set up and no other problems were encountered.
