Product Description

The Wireless-N Gigabit Router is three devices in one package. There's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. The Access Point built into the Router uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-N's Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G. Unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the Good Neighbor mode ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before gobbling up the radio band. To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The incredible speed of Wireless-N makes it ideal for media-centric applications like streaming video, gaming, and Voice over IP telephony, and gives you plenty of headroom to run multiple media-intense data streams through the network at the same time with no degradation in performance. With the Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games.

My Wireless G quit working. I didn’t want to mess with it anymore. So I hopped down to Office Max and bought this router. I intended to upgrade in the future anyway so this was my excuse.

Since I’m used to Linksys and also wireless, I figured this would not be much to install. I was right. It installed simply. I do suggest you put the CD in first and follow all the little rules. Even though you may know a lot about these things.

There is one mistake in the setup instructions. It tells you to put the cable from your PC into the Internet on the router. Wrong. The cable modem cable goes there. But you knew that. Right?

I also bought a wireless N adapter for my laptop, even though it’s a wireless G machine. I’m glad I did. It works just great.

The speed between computers is just unreal! And the range is fantastic. I even feel that the Internet is faster. Oh, I know a router can’t make the Internet faster. But it seems like it to me.

The speed difference between G and N is just out of this world. I’m very pleased with the router. Keep in mind, I just bought it today. So I may post an update.

But going from 57mbps to 135mbps is a real jump in speed. If you’re ready to upgrade, go for this. You won’t be disappointed.

Found my NetGear router dead (unsurprising after reading forums and reviews of the model I had), so I replaced it with this one. It was very easy to setup and it supports WMM (wireless multimedia) and QoS which was important to me since I have the T-Mobile Blackberry Curve that can do calls over WiFi. I did not install any software and had no problem getting this thing to work with my Macs and PCs — however, I have had several LinkSys routers in the past, which made knowing how to set this up without installing software pretty easy.

Beware, what another reviewer said about this router not being a “true N specification”. It is fully compliant with the latest draft standards. It uses MIMO technology (40MHz wide bandwidth), and operates in both the 2.4GHz and 5.2GHz spectrums. And it is true gigabit ethernet for wired devices (the spec sheet does state gigabit, several times actually. I checked the sheet, and I’m getting gigabit throughput between my two wired machines plugged into the router. It’s also important to realize that gigabit is way faster than even the fastest DSL or cable modem, so that measure of speed is only relevant when communicating between 2 computers that are both plugged into this router via an Ethernet cable.) Buying this won’t get you a faster connection to the internet.

UPDATE: This route is STILL working great for me. I’ve had it for 18 months now and not one hiccup. Most Linksys routers I’ve bought in the past would have died by now (for no apparent reason), but this one is still going strong. Works great with my MacBook, iPhone, and PCs.

I might be a day late and a dollar short but as long as you stand the product up on it’s side, there is no heat issue. If you either wall mount or mimic a wall mount by standing it on the side with the ports facing up you won’t have a heat issue at all. If you lay it flat, you will have heat issues. I tried it standing up with the ports face down but it got hot. The vents for the heat to escape are on the side with the ports so if you face that side up then there is no heat issues.

I bought this new Linksys Router when my old router started acting up. The new one started working when I plugged it in, and is still on the job.

I really like it, and should I have a problem, the Linksys people are hard working and courteous.

Good value for the money. Was concerned about reviews claiming it ran hot, and took the advice from one reviewer to stand it on its side. It leans against the stand to a work lamp and has never been more than what I would consider normally “warm”. Not to fear! Also, I live on the fourth floor of an apartment building, and the signal is detectable from the ground floor lobby. I would say no problem for those owning a big house! Thanks to Amazon for a good price and delivery!

I installed the router last night and I finally have full coverage throughout the entire house (both floors) with NO dropped signals. I use a PC laptop for work in the most remote part of the house and I now have 5 out of 5 bars and it has stayed connected continuously for almost 20 hours now. It used to drop the signal every hour or so and I’d have to reconnect. We have the following also accessing the router with no problems: 17″ iMac, Powerbook, (2) MacBooks, (2) MacMinis, Xbox and a PS3. The router’s performance has exceeded my expectations!

Update: I forgot to mention that I have not had the heat issue that others have mentioned. Mine is barely warm to the touch.

I needed to upgrade my old BEFSR41 (wired router) which served me well but did not have WIFI for my new laptop. This guy comes with 1G ports! That was a vast improvement over my old unit, which ran at 100M. Now I not only enjoy the security of my wired PC’s (4) but also can link it to WIFI equipment (50!). The WIFI is fast.

Caveat: I had a problem reaching one of my PC’s in my network. The problem turned out to be McAfee firewire protection. Some residual setting was blocking inbound traffic. McAfee resolved the problem for me, but because it took me a while to understand why this was happening, I hope I can save some of you time that have the same problem.

I’m very happy with this unit and it has the advanced security encription which I have installed and use. Now I have higher wired speed, increased security and WIFI!

    GO FOR IT!

When I first bought this router about 6 months ago I too noticed the heat issue, but once I updated the Firmware it cooled right down. I have not had to reset the router since and am very happy with it, but make sure to update the firmware. You first go to the linksys support page and download it, then log into the router (directions for this are in the manual which is also on the linksys support page) and go to the update firmware tab, browse for the file you downloaded and hit the button, if you don’t do this the router will run like crap, and maybe it will anyway but once I did it the router has been wonderful!

We had an old Linksys 80211b router and replaced it with this one to take advantage of the N speed in our laptops. Setup was easy. The PC we used as an network anchor is about 5 years old and the Linksys software slows the boot-up time on the PC a lot. My guess is this is not a problem with newer PC’s.

The network works great. We had problems with the old router reaching certain areas of the house, but this one reaches all areas without dropped connections. We’ve been using it for about 9 months now with N access cards from Dell, Apple, Lenovo, HP, and have had no issues.

I’ve read about problems with heat on this unit. It does run hot, but for us it is not a problem. We have leaned it on its side for venting and this has helped.

All in all, this is a very good router.

This is a review of the hardware. The first thing I did was install the Linux based DD-WRT firmware so I don’t know how good or bad the original Linksys software is.

Heat does not seem to be an issue for me. The device runs a little warm but no more so than my old router or gigabit switch. [...] reports 52 megabits down and 24 megabits up on my fiber line which is almost twice as fast as I’ve ever been able to get with my old WRT54G on the same line.

The wireless connection has been very stable. No dropouts to report of.
