this is a nice unit. i just bought it to have wireless at home via sbc dsl. but i could not get the connection after setting up pppoe. after browsing online, found this solution which may be useful for someone: log in to the modem. and change pppoe to bridge mode. after this, everything works pretty nicely. (prior to this, called dlink support. they did not know how to solve it.)

I’ve recently had the opportunity to set up two wireless networks for my friend’s and now my home, all on WinXP systems. For my friend, I picked up a Buffalo Airstation on advice of the head of the tech department (not the floor salesguy) at a computer retailer, and it installed flawlessly in minutes, including a firewall, valuable 128-bit WEP security, plus –what is even more important to me to prevent hacking– MAC filtering. For my own home, I went with a sale and got the Hawking 54M wireless G, and I couldn’t get it to work. Even with tweaking (I’ve been doing non-networking IT for fifteen years), I couldn’t get the router to connect with my ISP through my DSL connection. I went out and bought a D-Link (also 54M wireless G) on heavy discount at a different retailer, and like the Buffalo, it went up and running right away, and I easily set up the firewall, 128 bit WEP, and MAC filtering. [MAC filtering, for those of you who don't know, allows you to specify exactly which machines are allowed to connect to the router, and all other ones are shut out. This keeps the neighbors and others from hacking into your network, since WEP passwords aren't foolproof.] I like the D-Link.

I couldn’t believe how inexpensive this router was when I bought it. I intentionally kept the recipt away from the trash while I was setting this up in case it was rubbish. I’ve come to find out that I was wrong with my assumption.

    This router is;

    1) Easy on the bank account

    2) Had a simple setup guide

    3) Easy to setup

    4) Easy to configure

    5) Reliable in its function

    6) Has been running perfect for 2 months

I have to compliment D-Link on thier achievement to provide good quality low price routers. In this day and age, everyone should have a router at home for security reasons, and wireless accessability is just a plus.

This router is easy to setup and has multiple security settings. I can get online easily anywhere inside my house, and reasonably good reception outside my house at some distance.

I purchased this router to replace my D-Link DI-614+ and it works great! The first thing I noticed immediately out of the box was the size. The DI-524 is VERY small. About 1/3rd the size of the DI-614+. But it still has all of the same great features. Antenna signal strength is stronger and I am very pleased with this unit.

And here’s a quick note regarding the problems some people seem to have connecting this device to the Internet via their Cable or DSL modem. It seems that the WAN port is configured out of the box to be locked in at 100 Mbps. This is where the problem comes from. The vast majority of Cable and DSL modems out there operate at 10Mbps per second only. Uh-oh! Bad move D-Link! Because if you plug the router into the modem out of the box and you have a 10Mbps modem you won’t be able to connect the devices and you won’t be able to go online. Very dumb move D-Link. I bet tons of routers have been returned for service just because of this simple and fixable issue.

This is easily corrected by logging into the router and going to the “Tools” menu and then choosing “Misc”. Scroll to the middle of the page and find “WAN select to 10/100 Mbps” and select 10Mbps and click APPLY. Once the router reboots, your router and Cable or DSL modem will be working happily together and all is good. But there really is no reason that this device should be shipping with 100Mbps switched on by default. I hope that future firmware revisions will correct this issue so more novice users can easily setup this great router without issue.

Otherwise, a very good purchase and very good piece of equipment for anyone who is looking for an affordable and reliable WiFi router. Highly recommended.

… and I like the way it is super easy to use. duh. Web based interfaces rule the school and I hope that most D-Link products are the same as this, or better. :)

When installing it I would go for the setup wizard thingy and make sure to set your security settings. Especially if you don’t know what you are doing. and if you think you might not know what you are doing, you probably aren’t doing it right. :)

I bet most people that are looking for a wireless router that has 802.11g speeds (54Mbps) would enjoy this router. It is easy to use, small in size, and makes little to no dent on your pocketbook. Do people use poketbooks anymore? eh.

Setup is a snap but read the manual, the connect and power up sequence is important.

I have set up two of these units; mine linked up with my cable modem automatically without a hitch, my b-i-l’s needed about 5 internet addresses entered in and then it linked right up.

I suggest getting the router & modem linked up and talking to each other before turning on the encryption though.

If you are outdoors a tinted, low-E window or door will cause serious signal loss but that is not a fault of this unit

MUST see Jack Szwergold’s comment on May 9, 2004 before installation (thanks Jack!). I happen to have read his comment on the cable speed setting (10Mbps) before installation, otherwise would probably have spent hours trying to figure out why Internet Explorer is not working after installation.

You should definitely, if having problems, change your WAN port to be 10Mbps by default rather than 100Mbps. It helped me as well. I understand why D-Link make the port 100Mbps available since that is the standard now and someday all modems will have 100Mbps ports, but for now there are just some modems that can’t handle it. Besides your internet connection isn’t any faster than 10Mbps, well most people’s aren’t.

For me this router has been working great and I am in love with the low price for such good features. 802.11g wireless, good range, advanced firewall, easy to use, 4 LAN ports, Parental Controls, and some other stuff I can’t think of right now. Either way, I like this router and would recommend it to others.

If you are new to wireless routers, or never had one of your won that you’ve had to take care of (not much care). Then this router is for you. It’s real easy to use thanks to the wizards that walk you through things and the included documentation seems to be good enough for beginners. You do have to know some things about computers, as this isn’t for the absolute newbie.

Overall this router packs a punch for such a low price. There is good wireless performance, good wired performance and the router seems to be stable with constant flows of traffic running through it. I haven’t had any trouble with this router since I got it. I expect the same for others.
