  having owned a 108mbps DWL-G132 usb adapter from d-link and never having any major issues with it, i got one of these for my flashy new dir-655 router. the old d-link 624 router actually died but the usb adapter never had any real issues.

  i hoped to get much better wireless speeds with the whole N thing. firstly, grabbed the latest drivers off d-links site, plug in – direct windows to the driver folder for my OS (xp) and away we go. IMPORTANT – do not install the drivers/software off the disc because this installs unnecessary services onto your pc. the default xp/vista wireless connectivity menus are fine if you ask me. also, these little d-link services cause issues with XP SP3 and have even been known to make the connection itself unstable. it’s definitely best to run with the driver only.

  i was connecting at 130mbps to start with, full signal as i am top of the router. running perfectly for a while and still very fast but scratching my head why it’s not even faster given my proximity and the top speed of 300mbps on wireless n. another reviewer mentioned running at 130mbps too but was happy enough. well, after a little googling i found out you can fix it up to full speed by changing a router setting. i was thought that would be the case anyway. so if you are running a dir-655 or similar d-link router with this adapter and only getting 130mbps this is what to do…

  you need to go into manual wireless network settings and change channel width from the default setting of 20mhz to auto (20/40mhz). you can still run a mixed mode wlan and changing the security type didn’t make any difference either – its just that channel width setting. broadcasting at 20mhz will always max out at 130mbps and is the more neighbour friendly option, which would explain why its defaulted. now connecting at a smooth 270mbps

  so far big thumbs up for the device, can’t understand why there’s so many negative reviews for these things. £25 is a very fair price too, my old turbo G adapter cost over £40 a few years back. this could all change if it isn’t reliable over a period of time but rest assured it will get a lot of use and my review will be updated if anything happens. d-link give a 11 year warranty on all their new wireless equipment. if you ask me that’s pretty damn good.

  I bought a new Dell desktop machine running Windows 7, and wanted to add a wireless network adapter. While researching many adapters, I found that many of the cheaper ones do not support Windows 7. The D-Link DWA-140 was listed on the Windows 7 compatibility Center ([...]), and was well reviewed by many people. The price was also fairly low.

  When I received the DWA-140, I did not use the supplied CD. I just plugged it into a USB port, and it was immediately recognized by Windows 7. I was prompted for my WEP code, and it connected to my wireless network without any problems.

  I still use a 802.11 G router (D-Link DI-524), so I wasn’t able to test the 802.11 N function.

  I was very pleased to have it work right out of the box. Other wireless network adapters I’ve tried in the past (with Windows 98 and Windows XP) have caused me hours of aggravation.

  If you get this network adapter, and are using Windows 7, DO NOT use the supplied CD, just plug it in and it works!

  I bought this as I have an HP Laptop with a failing internal network card. (After less than 2 years and HP would not fix it). This USB card is a much better (faster, no dropping) connection than my internal wireless card ever had.

  I replaced a 802.11g with the 802.11n. No comparison in performance. It has been great and my experience with D-Link has been excellent when it comes to customer service.

  I can’t understand the negative reviews for this product. I’ve never installed a wireless device and I had this fully functional is less than a half hour. I went to the D-Link website and downloaded the lastest drivers and install. The installation was effortless. The only problem I had was on my end. I’m using a Verizon suppplied Westell VersaLink DSL modem/router and needed the encryption key. It took a few minutes to figure out that the key is listed on the back of the box. Once I entered the key the installation was finished. The Westell device doesn’t support 4x so I’m restricted to its limitations but the download speeds equal what I getting before with ethernet. I’m using XP sp3 so I can’t comment on Vista, MAC etc. I intend to buy two more of these for the other computers in the household. For the money this thing is hard to beat!

  I have never installed a wireless router or Adapter before, but I must say this installed using the wizard without any problems. The DWA-140 adapter is on a windows Xp home. I am getting 130mbps upstairs form router passing through a floor and a wall, no lag with cable broadband download speed is 10Mbps from modem which has a 2.4 Ghz phone service as well, did not see any interference . I am very pleased with ease of installation and performance. Highly recommend. Time will about endurance

  I discovered that my second computer would not accept the internal adapter card and returned for replacement with the D-Link DWA USB adapter.
  
  Glad I did since installation takes only a few minutes and it seems to work just as good…also portable if I ever need to move it to a different computer. I am using the DWA-140 adapter with the D-Link DIR-655 wireless N router. Would highly recommend.

  I purchased this device after going through a lot of reviews for other models and I’ve been very happy with it. I have the DWA-140 installed in my htpc, connected to my D-Link DIR-655. It easily pulls down full wireless-n speed so that I can watch netflix instant view movies at high quality (as opposed to my previous wireless-g adapter, which could only receive “low” or “medium” quality streams).

  If you already have a D-Link wireless router, the software can be helpful for getting up and running quickly. I had some dropouts with the D-Link drivers, however, so I recommend that you use the Ralink drivers (download the RT2870 drivers directly from ralink’s website).

  The build quality is actually quite good. It’s made of a solid plastic that feels rubberized. It also comes with a weighty USB extension cable/base that’s about 3 feet long.

  Word to the wise: the cheaper version (DWA-130) has issues, particularly one of the hardware revisions does not have 64-bit drivers. Also, some adapters simply won’t work well in combination with particular wireless routers (even if they are both wireless-n). Do some research before buying to make sure that your router will work with this adapter and save yourself from potential headaches.

  The one thing that bothered me about this adapter was the price, but after trying three cheaper adapters and getting nowhere (and some corrupted downloads)… well, sometimes you get what you pay for.

  I recently picked up a free DIR-625 wireless router from a family member, and needed to get an access point to use with it. I found the DWA 140 on Amazon for about half what the local chain stores wanted, so I picked it up. Setup was a breeze. I was quite ready to spend hours and brain power setting this thing up (as I have done in the past with wireless networks), but much to my enjoyment it took only a few minutes. Just follow the instructions, make sure your router is already functioning, and you’re set.

  I did the ‘manual install’ and just punched in my network name and password, and it worked immediately.

  It’s more than enough speed for my cable internet, and I notice no lag during anything online even with the wireless signal going through a couple walls and a closet. It’s never had any trouble connecting, never lost signal, nor given me any grief so far.

  You don’t see in the pics on Amazon, but it also comes with a nifty USB base that plugs into your USB port on your computer, so you can place it out of the way.

  Great little USB adapter. Get it.
