I was quite happy with this router. It was a good buy and it was nice to have the modem built in. It is compact and lightweight. The one thing I was impressed with was the range of the signal. I can use the computer anywhere in the house without a problem, and the speed is excellent. We have two laptops, and we can both watch videos at the same time. I wanted to be able to get online out in the shop, which is about 200 feet from the house. The signal is lower out there, but I can still surf without a problem.
I bought this unit for my daughter in New Mexico. She got Qwest DSL-only service (no phone service) for $10/month for three months, then $40/mo after that (for 1.5Mb down, 850K up). I did not even know such a service was available until we called Qwest. Their modem was $99 so this one saved us $20. The unit works well but it took a few calls to tech support on both ends to set it up. I found I was part of the problem–when it says to put the filter between the modem and the phone line, it MEANS it! Even if you don’t have phone service on the line, you NEED THE FILTER to split off the DSL signal! I had to verify a bunch of settings with Qwest tech support and get Netgear tech support’s help to get everything set up, but then it worked perfectly. All the tech support help from Netgear was friendly and competent. Highly recommended!
This is a very good DSL modem combo. It runs 24×7 with no problems at all. The only trick for it to work with ATT DSL is setup the right VPI/VCI as 0/35. Otherwise it won’t find any dsl signal. Different ISPs might get different VPI/VCI. Just google and try it. Or let the modem search it for you. But you need to wait pretty long time until it finishes the search routine.
The DDNS only works with dyndns.com. But that’s not a big deal. dyndns.com is pretty good for free DDNS service. The port forwarding also works good. Firewall setup is very straight forward. The Wifi signal gets excellent range. It also gets Mac address list filtering.
The wireless printer server, VOIP (Italkbb) and Skype all works excellent with it.
The ONLY problem is that it cannot send the logs files to my email address. The reason is the netgear router send the emails through the default SMTP port 25 without TSL/SSL encryption. But port 25 is blocked by almost every major ISPs in United States. So that’s the dilemma. Either ATT needs to unblock port 25 specifically for your account or let the netgear fix their bad firmware to embed the TSL/SSL SMTP on other ports at your choice.
Maybe I am asking too much for this little dsl combo modem. All in all, it is perfect for home use.
I bought a refurb unit a couple months ago, to replace the ailing Speedstream modem which SBC Yahoo! sent out to me when I signed up. It’s fast, reliable, easy to set up, and I’ve retired my Linksys firewall and D-Link WAP at the same time – - 1 box instead of 3, now! No complaints whatsoever.
Replacing Qwest/Actiontec wireless gateway. Setup went quickly and smoothly. Process was clear at all steps, with Netgear instructions and notes at every screen to offer explanations, comments, etc.
I’ve been using this for about a year now. The automatic configuration did not work with my Covad DSL. I had to call Covad to get the DSL configuration parameters. After I entered those into the DSL modem (along with my account information), the DSL connection has been rock solid. I have it on all the time. Once every couple of months, it loses the signal for a couple of hours. That is more likely due to a Covad problem than a modem problem.
The Wireless-G router works great, too. I have laptop computers, internet radios, and my Tivo hooked up to it and they all work fine. The wireless-G speed is more than adequate for my needs. If you do a lot of big data transfers between computers, then the wireless-N speed may be better for you.
No problems with the wireless encryption. All my devices are able to login OK. No problems using the internet router firewall either. I trust that a lot more than the software firewall in my PC.
There are a lot of positive attributes to this product. First, if you’re renting your DSL modem this will save you money every month. It’s great if you’re looking for an easy to set up home network or wireless network. The parental features are extremely useful and tamper proof.
The parental controls could be a little more flexible (e.g. allowing for seperate schedules for each day of the week) and the modem seems to slow when multi-tasking.
My brother talked with at&t tech support when we first signed up, and got everything he needed and set it up by himself. It works like a champ. Hasn’t crashed or anything. I even unplugged it, moved it to another location in the house, and it kept all the settings and it still works. No problems here.
Don’t listen to the Customer Service at Century Link when they tell you that you need to rent there modems. After many bad customer service calls, they went to my place and connected the wires outside my place (which is what the original problem was) and after using the setup CD from Netgear I was online. No other changes are needed to the setup configuration. Be persistent with your service provider. Skype performed perfectly. So far no problems with this product. Netgears customer service is really good too. The centurylink service person put a splitter on my outside connection so there is a dedicated DSL line for one jack in my house, which eliminates any filters for the phones.
