I needed a way to add wifi support to my sling catcher. Worked great, bought one for my parents. Provides a way to allow non-wifi enabled products to access my wireless network. Highly recommend.
The size is very small. Easy to carry during travel. It has a bag for you which contains everything you need. The wireless range and performance are very good. You need to spend some time to configure it. It is the same effort comparing to other products.
I use it to relay the Internet traffic for my netbook and iPhone 4. It works very good with them.
I travel a lot and spend way too much time in hotels where the only internet connection they have is a short wired connection sitting near some uncomfortable desk. I used to carry around a longer wire and a connector so that I could sit wherever I wanted in the room, but it is just a pain to do so.
A few years ago I found a solution in a small wireless AP sold by Asus (the WL-300 and later the WL-330g) which I used for a number of years with lots of success. However, I finally decided it was time to upgrade to 802.11n.
A bit of searching/comparing brought me to the TrendNet 654TR. Ordered one from Amazon and had it in my hands in a couple of days.
The device is much smaller and sleeker than the Asus model. Setup was easy to follow and configure (though I would enter a small complaint that I had to configure the “router” mode settings and the “AP” mode settings individually — when I switched from “router” to “AP” it was as if I had gone back to factory defaults — even the encryption keys & wireless configuration had to be configured again). This is just a minor complaint, easily dealt with and for many people, one they would never run into.
I’ve used the device at home and in several hotels on the road to great success. Rather than lugging the included AC power adapter, I simply use my iPhone USB charging block along with the included USB power adapter and I can power the unit with my little white apple block.
So now I carry this device with me on all my trips and use it here/there.
Very satisfied. If you’re looking for a portable AP to carry around with you, this is it!
I purchased this so that I’d be able to work on my laptop while visiting my parents who have broadband but no WIFI. Setup was simple and connection was basically automatic. The only drawback was limited range, but that was understandable given that this is a device designed for hotel rooms and so on. It is NOT a whole-house solution for wireless. This little router saved me from having a waste a day of vacation in Starbucks just to meet a work deadline. Great value for the money.
The TRENDnet “Wireless-N Travel Router Kit” is a great solution for those of us who travel to hotels and other locations that have Internet connections but no WiFi. The setup was easy and the performance greatly exceeded my expectations. Here are my observations:
Pros -
+ Easy To Setup; the “Wizard” very intuitive and surprisingly brief*
+ AC or USB Power; includes an AC Wall Adapter and a USB Power Cable (see “Cons”, below)
+ Good Range; worked from far end of house, up one floor
+ Router and Access Point (AP) Modes; can be configured for the primary purpose of providing WiFi from an Internet connection or as an AP Client to provide WiFI to network devices without native wireless support
+ Small Size; smaller than most cell phones
+ Nice Travel Case; the kit includes a nice case for all of the components (also includes a Cat 5 Ethernet Cable)
Cons -
- USB Power Cable requires two free USB ports that are physically close together, but an extension cable (not included) could be used
* I am fairly technical and have setup many wireless networks and devices, but am sure that most people could follow the setup “Wizard” with little or no help from their favorite “geek”.
Overall, I am very pleased with the features and performance of this device, especially at the relatively low price this goes for on Amazon.
I use this at school because not all the buildings have wifi but have Ethernet ports. Works easy all I have to do is plug it into the Ethernet port and power.
This is a great little router. Don’t expect it to be a whole-house router. It works great for a hotel room, and I even gave one to a friend in Brazil who uses it at home for her bedroom and living room (separated by a masonry wall). Configuration is remarkably flexible for a travel router, and the push-button configuration works well. No troubles connecting Windows XP and Vista computers equipped with 802.11g adapters, and it has worked with a variety of ISPs in hotels in the U.S. and abroad.
I had originally purchased the DLink wireless travel router. Upon receipt I found it more difficult to configure to PPPoE DSL routers. After some searching I found the Trendnet router which offer 802.11n, but more importantly after searching the web I located the users guide and was pleased to see an easy DSL configuration.
Although the range does not match my normal home N router by Belkin, the router performs well. Configuration is straight forward and offers the same features as the DLink. As a matter of fact the case and included items are exactly the same as the Dlink unit. But because of the ease of configuration and added N performance, the extra $5.00 was well worth the switch.
My family and I travel alot, and there are still plenty of hotels within the U.S and especially abroad without Wifi in the room or just has a weak signal. The TRENDnet-654TR is just the solution to that problem, it’s wireless N is very fast and has excellent range. I travel with a laptop primarily, but my wife and kids use Apple ipads for travel, this is a must have if you travel with an ipad!…Trust me.
The TRENDnet-654TR is tiny, the pictures above are very deceiving (youtube it to find a video). Super simple set up, it works right out of the box after plugging in a an ethernet cable and power (you can even use your iphone or ipad power block for the power source instead of the adapter that it comes with). The only other thing you optionally have to do is set up the security encryption, which is still pretty easy (do it before your trip so that anything you need to access it is already set up).
I wish regular home wireless routers were this easy to set up!
In most hotels the wireless is slow but the hard lines are still fast. With this I get my fast wireless back. Set up was 5 minutes. Router has great range in single rooms but drops off in suites with a dividing wall. Still, I have not dropped a connection in any room yet. Great investment for road warriors like me!
